Anionic Polyacrylamide (APAM) is a high-molecular-weight, water-soluble polymer synthesized through the copolymerization of acrylamide and anionic monomers such as acrylic acid. With a negative charge along its polymer backbone, APAM exhibits exceptional flocculation, bridging, and adsorption properties that make it uniquely suited for removing suspended solids, colloidal particles, and turbidity from complex wastewater streams.
APAM flocculants are available in powder, granule, and emulsion forms, with molecular weights ranging from 8 to 25 million Daltons and hydrolysis degrees from 10% to 40%. These tunable parameters allow engineers to precisely match the flocculant chemistry to the specific characteristics of each wastewater application — from lightly turbid municipal effluents to heavily loaded mining and industrial process waters.

APAM Flocculant
Molecular Weight: 8–25 Million Da
Hydrolysis Degree: 10%–40%
Forms: Powder · Granule · Emulsion
A four-stage mechanism delivers rapid, reliable solid-liquid separation across diverse wastewater types.
The anionic groups along the APAM chain interact with positively charged colloidal particles in the wastewater, neutralizing their surface charge and destabilizing the suspension.
The long-chain polymer bridges multiple destabilized particles simultaneously, forming large, dense floc aggregates that are easy to separate by sedimentation or filtration.
Aggregated flocs grow rapidly under gentle mixing, increasing in size and density. Settling velocities increase dramatically compared to untreated wastewater, reducing clarifier footprint.
APAM-treated sludge exhibits superior dewaterability, reducing cake moisture content and cutting sludge disposal costs — a critical factor in modern zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) systems.
APAM achieves turbidity removal rates exceeding 95% in most industrial applications, outperforming conventional inorganic coagulants at significantly lower dosage rates (typically 0.5–5 ppm).
Modern APAM formulations are designed to minimize residual acrylamide monomer content (<0.001%), meeting stringent international environmental standards including EU REACH and China GB regulations.
Effective across pH 5–12 and temperatures from 5°C to 60°C, APAM performs reliably in diverse industrial environments without requiring complex pre-treatment conditioning.
Low effective dosage, reduced sludge volumes, and improved dewatering performance combine to deliver total cost of ownership savings of 20–40% versus traditional coagulation-only approaches.
Molecular weight, ionic charge density, and polymer architecture can be precisely tailored to match specific wastewater chemistry, ensuring optimal performance in each unique application.
Manufactured under ISO-certified quality systems with annual capacity exceeding 1 million tons, ensuring consistent product quality and reliable supply for large-scale industrial customers.
From municipal sewage plants to heavy industry — APAM flocculant delivers proven performance across the full spectrum of wastewater treatment challenges.
APAM is widely deployed in urban wastewater treatment plants for primary clarification, secondary sludge thickening, and tertiary polishing. It enhances suspended solids removal and supports compliance with increasingly stringent discharge standards for COD, SS, and total phosphorus.
In tailings dewatering, mineral concentrate thickening, and process water recycling, APAM dramatically improves solid-liquid separation efficiency. It enables higher underflow densities in thickeners, faster filtration rates, and significant reductions in fresh water consumption — critical for water-stressed mining regions.
Shield tunneling and construction site runoff generates high-turbidity slurry wastewater. APAM provides rapid flocculation of clay, silt, and concrete fines, enabling on-site water recycling and compliance with zero-discharge construction site requirements in urban environments.
APAM serves as a retention and drainage aid in papermaking, improving fiber and filler retention on the wire while simultaneously clarifying white water for reuse. It reduces raw material losses and cuts fresh water consumption in closed-loop paper mill systems.
In oilfield produced water treatment, APAM aids in the separation of oil-water emulsions and suspended solids, enabling produced water reuse for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) injection. It also supports refinery wastewater treatment for API separator and dissolved air flotation (DAF) units.
Starch processing, sugar refining, and agricultural runoff treatment all benefit from APAM's ability to rapidly clarify high-organic-load wastewater. It enables efficient recovery of valuable by-products and reduces BOD loading on downstream biological treatment systems.
The anionic polyacrylamide flocculant market is entering a period of accelerated growth driven by tightening environmental regulations, industrial water scarcity, and the global push toward circular water economy models.
The global polyacrylamide market was valued at approximately USD 4.8 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 7.2 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of over 6.0%. Anionic grades account for the largest market share, driven primarily by water treatment applications across Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe.
